Abducted Man Found Murdered in Churachandpur; Police Register Suo Motu Case

A 29-year-old man was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Manipur’s Churachandpur district on the night of Wednesday, January 21, in a chilling incident that was reportedly recorded on camera and later circulated on social media.

The deceased has been identified as Mayanglambam Rishikant Singh, a resident of Kakching district. According to police sources, Singh had recently returned from Nepal, where he had been working for the past two years, and was visiting his wife in Churachandpur. He had arrived in the district on December 19, travelling via Aizawl in neighbouring Mizoram.

Police said the incident took place at around 9:30 pm. Shortly after the killing, a video purportedly showing the shooting was widely shared on WhatsApp. Officials revealed that the video was uploaded from an IP address based in Guwahati and was titled “no peace no popular governments.”

In her statement to the police, the victim’s wife alleged that four unidentified men arrived in a black SUV and were looking for her husband before the incident. She further stated that no one except the village chief was aware of her husband’s arrival in the area, raising serious questions about how the assailants tracked him.

The body of the deceased was later recovered from T. Natjang Village and has been sent to the district morgue for post-mortem examination.

Churachandpur Police have taken up a suo motu FIR in connection with the murder and launched a full-scale investigation. Efforts are underway to identify the assailants, trace the source of the video, and establish the motive behind the killing.

Further investigation is in progress.
